3 Common Issues ID’d During Elevator Inspections

All elevators are required to undergo safety and operational inspections at different times. During these inspections, which are conducted by appropriate authorities, a technician will conduct a thorough inspection of the car, the hoistway and the machine room to ensure that the elevator as a whole is in proper working condition. While all elevators require routine maintenance, as the years of use add up, it is more common to find that an elevator or elevator component may need additional service. The following are three common issues found during routine safety and operation inspections that need to be addressed by a professional elevator repair company.

Failed Emergency Car Lighting
One of the most common issues found during elevator inspections is failed emergency lighting. This issue often occurs because the system is attached to a battery, which needs to be replaced at certain intervals. This lighting system is also often attached to the emergency bell, which makes it more crucial that the system as a whole is operating appropriately. If any or all emergency lighting or communication systems fail, you could leave passengers stranded should an outage occur.

Incorrect Machine Room Lighting
Another lighting issue that often comes to light, pun intended, during these inspections, is inadequate machine room lighting. Machine rooms and elevator pits are required to have lighting that protects against breakage. It is also required to be accessible from the entrances of both the machine room and pit.

Improperly Operating Door Restrictors
Elevator doors are required to have restrictors that prevent the doors from opening when the car is not at a landing. If these restrictors do not work as designed, they will need to be repaired or replaced to ensure safe operation.
