Elevating Kitsap County: A Look at Five Cities Our Technicians Love Visiting
At Olympic Elevator, our technicians cover a lot of ground across Washington state, from the city skyline of Seattle to the quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods of the Olympic Peninsula. One region our team always enjoys visiting is Kitsap County. Whether it’s for scheduled maintenance or a new installation, trips to this part of the Puget Sound are always a treat.
From its rich maritime history to its tight-knit communities and beautiful waterfronts, Kitsap County is full of unique stories. Let’s take a closer look at five of the cities we frequently serve, and what makes each one special.
Bainbridge Island
A Blend of Art, Nature, and History
A quick ferry ride from Seattle, Bainbridge Island is often called one of the most beautiful small towns in America. But long before tourists and weekend travelers discovered its scenic shores, Bainbridge was home to the Suquamish people for thousands of years. Today, you can still feel that deep connection to land and water throughout the island’s many parks and nature preserves.
Incorporated in 1991, Bainbridge Island is relatively new as a city, but it has a rich and complex past. During World War II, it was the first community in the U.S. from which Japanese Americans were forcibly removed under Executive Order 9066. Today, the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial stands as a place of remembrance and education.
The island also boasts a vibrant arts scene and the nationally recognized Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. Whether you're strolling through Winslow’s quaint shops or servicing a residential elevator tucked in the trees, Bainbridge Island always offers something to appreciate.
Bremerton
Shipyards, Submarines, and the Spirit of the Sound
Bremerton is the largest city in Kitsap County and serves as a major hub for the U.S. Navy. The city grew rapidly in the early 1900s thanks to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, which remains a cornerstone of the local economy and identity.
During World War II, Bremerton was booming, drawing workers from around the country. By 1942, the population had nearly tripled. Today, Bremerton blends its naval roots with growing arts and culture. The Harborside Fountain Park, Kitsap History Museum, and Admiral Theatre are local favorites.
Our technicians often find themselves downtown, near the ferry terminal, or at newer developments in East Bremerton. It’s a city with deep heritage, and one that continues to evolve.
Port Orchard
The County Seat with a Maritime Heart
Across Sinclair Inlet from Bremerton lies Port Orchard, the seat of Kitsap County. Originally known as Sidney, the town was renamed in 1892 and remains a charming waterfront community to this day.
The city’s downtown is lined with small businesses, antique shops, and classic diners. Port Orchard hosts the annual Seagull Calling Festival (yes, you read that right) where participants try to out-squawk each other for prizes and local pride. It’s quirky, it’s fun, and it perfectly captures the small-town character of the place.
From historic buildings to new construction, we’ve worked on a wide variety of elevator projects here. No matter how many times we visit, Port Orchard always feels like a little step back in time, in the best way.
Poulsbo
Little Norway on the Kitsap Peninsula
Known affectionately as “Little Norway,” Poulsbo was settled by Norwegian immigrants in the late 1800s, who found the landscape reminiscent of their homeland. The town proudly celebrates its Scandinavian roots, especially in the vibrant downtown area, where Viking murals and Nordic pastries await.
The historic Front Street is packed with locally owned shops, art galleries, and bakeries. Don’t leave without trying the world-famous treats from Sluys Poulsbo Bakery. The city also offers a gorgeous waterfront park and a marina that attracts boaters from around Puget Sound.
Our technicians always enjoy the scenic drive into Poulsbo. It’s a town that balances heritage and modern living beautifully.
Silverdale
The Unincorporated Center of Commerce
Unlike the other cities on this list, Silverdale is unincorporated, but that doesn’t stop it from being a major player in the region. Located between Bremerton and Poulsbo, Silverdale is home to Kitsap Mall, a variety of big-box retailers, medical facilities, and growing residential developments.
Once a rural farming area, Silverdale has transformed over the past few decades into a commercial and residential hub. Still, it offers access to outdoor spaces like the Clear Creek Trail and Old Mill Park, keeping nature close by.
Because of its business density and ongoing development, Silverdale keeps us busy, and we’re glad it does.
